Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic

The Bud Billiken® Parade and Picnic was begun in 1929 by Chicago Defender’s newspaper founder, Robert S. Abbott, as a way for him to show his appreciation to the newspaper’s paper boys. Always held on the second Saturday of August, it has developed into the city’s premier Back-to-School event.

Many celebrities, entertainers and elected officials are participants in the parade. However, the real stars of the Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic are the hundreds of local and out of state bands, drill teams, dance teams, car clubs and students. At the end of the parade’s route in Washington Park is the After-Parade Activities, a large picnic with local entertainment, food, music, and free give-a-ways.
